Chanel Fall/Winter 2024 Couture - Review

Theatre and drama were promised for this Chanel couture collection, showcasing in the Palais Garnier the stage was certainly setting the scene. And, from around the corner, out steps Vittoria Ceretti in this billowing black opera cape with an exaggerated bow detail. Wonderment at the thought that this could be the first Chanel show that has peaked my attention in some time. We all know of the rumours that Chanel ruins the celebrities it works with and they are freed once their contracts end, but I could see the A-List clamouring for this cape.

Sadly, the excitement did not last long as Vittoria was quickly followed by a succession of tweed suit sets with awkward length skirts. A continuation from Chanel’s … collection. I understand that the tweed set is a house staple for Chanel, but I think it has been made matronly and boring in recent years so I was not ecstatic to see them make a return for the couture collection. An understandable return to the safe however following the recent exit of Viriginie Viard, the former creative director of Chanel who took over after Karl Lagerfeld.

Luckily for those with the same taste as me, the skirt suits did come to an end and the billowing styles made a return, lifting the mood of the event significantly. We got this array of feminine ensembles with big bows, lots of ruffles and exaggerated silhouettes. A nice direction towards what the venue was offering the viewer. Christophe Honoré gave the theatre a reimagining for the event, giving audience members the experience that opera goers have had since the Palais Garnier opened 150 years ago.

There were plenty of good pieces in this collection for both the buyer of Chanel and those who simply want to bring a bit of that Chanel flair to their home wardrobes. Big hair bows were the calling and flowing taffeta was the winner as the models glided around the theatre. What the future of Chanel holds may be unknown for now but within the collection a cohesive story was put forward.
